Research is suggesting that people are not very self-aware! A metasynthesis found that people only have moderate understanding of their real abilities. They also underestimate the factors in life that help us to become more aware of our ablitiles (Zell, & Krizan, 2014). The researchers who found this were looking at how people evaluated themselves on aspects like intelligence and then compared this to how they actually did on an intelligence test. It seems that the individuals in the research weren’t very good at estimating their real abilities. Self-awareness is important and here are some steps to increase your self-awareness so you can take advantage of your full potential!
Introspection and Retrospection
Self-awareness can be complex and the techniques of becoming more self-aware are similarly complex. Introspection (looking at yourself) and retrospection (looking at your past) are common methods that people use on their own or sometimes with therapists. Taking time to ponder on life questions and your experiences can lead to priceless “aha! moments”. In this high-tech era, we usually do not have ample minutes to look into ourselves. However, you need to invest enough time on your emotional intelligence if you truly want to function well. Writing has been suggested to be specifically helpful in expressing and recognizing our thoughts and feelings. Also, journaling your emotions and views can be quite cathartic. Great things start on paper!
Just Try It!
Have you always wanted to know how it feels like to bake a pie or go rock climbing? Just try it! Exploring novel activities can let you know more about what you like and what you can do. Moreover, talking with people from different walks of life can be great sources of self-knowledge. When you find yourself in a new environment, take note of how you react. This insight may be a deciding factor for a new job offer or an impending commitment.
Meaningful conversations can provide much needed authentic feedback. Humbly asking what others think of your performance is indeed beneficial. With this method, having an open mind is necessary to discern which ones to accept and internalize. Products, administrations, government agencies, and other organizations employ this principle by soliciting suggestions and feedbacks. It is natural for us to have blind spots about our personality. Thus, asking others’ opinions can provide more avenues for self-improvement as well as healthy self-appreciation.
A number of personality assessments have been utilized to narrow down applicants. These psychometric tools can be helpful in specifying certain traits. For instance, the Big Five Personality Test or the Five Factor Model is usually used in evaluating an individual’s openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. There are also worthwhile online personality quizzes that can significantly evaluate your mindfulness, emotional intelligence, narcissism, and defining personality traits (Geregoire,2014) .
By taking into consideration the above-mentioned techniques, you can have a fairly efficient perspective of your unique profile. Self-awareness is an endless pursuit. Enjoy learning more about who you truly are and who you can be. Get ready for some sweet surprises as you go through life’s challenges!
